Destinations are popular places on hot summer days, so providing a sustainable water source to visitors is essential.

Encouraging visitors to bring their own reusable water bottles, selling reusable water bottles on site, and choosing the best refill option are all important pieces of the puzzle.

In this section, we’ll help you select the best water refill choices for your destination.

Some contain a tank and can be pre-filled with drinking water (ensure adequate size provision). They can also be connected to existing taps on site.

Some offer the option of a chiller unit to keep water cold (may need mains power connection).

Water fountains/bubblers

How does it work?

Installing permanent water fountains/bubblers is a good option for many destinations.

Visitors can be directed to water fountains by signage and destination maps. You can also let them know via pre-visit communications that water fountains are available and encourage them to bring their own reusable water bottles. Install bright and inviting signage to highlight the location of water fountains/bubblers.

Be sure to keep water fountains well maintained, clean and functional.

Is it free for visitors?

Yes

What are the costs?

Upfront capital expenditure, maintenance costs and water bills.

Additional infrastructure required

- Water/tap connections.

- Signage to promote water station.

Pre-bottled water in reusable bottles

How does it work?

Some water distributors are beginning to offer their product in resealable and reusable aluminium bottles. These are sent to your destination pre-filled with fresh water.

Simply set up a return station (refer to reusable and wash-up logistics sections of this guide) for visitors to return their bottle to after use.

Bottles are then collected by the provider, washed and reused.

Is it free for visitors?

No - guests pay a fee for their bottle of water.

What are the costs?

Varies per provider. A purchase and delivery fee will apply.

Additional infrastructure required

- Collection point/station for used bottles.

- Storage area for used bottles.
