A successful reuse system must promote behaviour change, encourage refill, and be supported by the necessary infrastructure, such as wash hubs, beverage refill stations, and trained personnel to ensure consumer education and awareness.
REUSE PLAYBOOK
Congratulations on deciding to make the switch to reusables in your workplace!
Achieving this change with your staff though is more than just providing cups and signage. Essentially, your goal is to create a culture change in your workplace towards reuse.
That's where this guide can help. It utilises best practice behaviour change principals, and the initiatives within it increase the chance of long-term success.
It's also fun to implement, and we've found it's a great way to foster a sense of pride and community in your staff.
This guide will make implementing your program as easy and successful as possible.
THE PROBLEM WITH SINGLE USE
Around 3.4 million tonnes of plastic is used in Australia each year, and a whopping 1 million tonnes of that is single-use plastic, used once and then thrown away. Of those 1 million tonnes, only 13% is recycled, with most (84%) ending up in landfill (Australian Government 2021).
The global plastic recycling rate is a mere 9% (The Economist, 2018).
This creates a huge burden on both the environment and our waste system, as single-use plastics don’t break down - instead they break up into smaller pieces, including dangerous micro and nano plastics which enter the food chain and can have disastrous outcomes for both animal and human health.
The most effective way to reduce single-use plastic waste is to
not create it in the first place.
After avoiding and reducing packaging, reusing is the next best option.
